My training and research interests are in the molecular pathogenesis of obligate-intracellular bacterial pathogens. My lab's research focus centers on Coxiella burnetii, the causative agent of Q fever. Usually, C. burnetii is acquired through close contact with animals (particularly ruminants), making it a zoonotic pathogen. C. burnetii is environmentally stable, acquired through an aerosol route, and has a very low infectious dose making it a potential biothreat agent. Upon infection, C. burnetii lives and replicates within its host cell in a parasitophorous vacuole which retains the attributes of a mature phagolysosome.  Efforts in my lab are currently centered on identifying and characterizing bacterial proteins secreted during infection and the systems used to secrete them.  Another area of research is in looking at the host cells response to infection by C. burnetii at a molecular level using microarray technologies. Understanding bacterial and host factors which may be involved in the invasion, intracellular trafficking, host immune-avoidance, and subsequent replication of C. burnetii in this hostile environment may lead to novel diagnostic, detection, or intervention strategies.
